Description

A program of discovery-based research on noncentrosymmetric (NCS) structures is planned. Targeted synthesis of NCS materials by hydrothermal, solvothermal, and solid-state methods will be achieved through the use of polar, anionic basic-building units (BBUs), which impart useful physical properties to these materials as determined by the arrangement of BBUs in the crystal lattice. Materials synthesized in our lab will be structurally characterized by single crystal and powder x-ray diffraction techniques. Measurements of nonlinear optical (NLO) properties, such as second harmonic generation (SHG), will be performed on single crystals of discovered materials. Synthetic challenges will be addressed using chemical intuition aided by machine learning methods that elucidate important trends from large amounts of experimental data. The proposed research, including detailed examinations of the synthesis, structures, and properties of NCS materials, will lead to discovery of new NCS materials and new strategies for future NCS materials synthesis.
