Support for Sajid Ali & Ming Du

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Northwestern PI and student advisor: Prof. Chris Jacobsen, Dept. Physics & Astronomy, Northwestern University ANL supervisor: Dr. Youssef Nashed, Mathematics and Computer Science Division, Argonne National Lab Northwestern University researchers Sajid Ali and Ming Du are to carry out work on the Argonne LDRD project “Learning and Differentiating: Using Artificial Intelligence to Image Beyond the X-ray Depth of Focus Limit.” Sajid Ali will compare the use of Fresnel wave propagation methods against finite difference methods for simulating the 3D propagation of x-ray waves in refractive media. Ming Du will document present progress on using automatic differentiation methods for reconstruction of 3D object beyond the depth of focus limit as a benchmark for later comparisons against artificial intelligence methods. This work will be carried out primarily at Northwestern University, with occasional visits to Argonne for discussions and presentations. The deliverables for the above period include the following: • Monthly email summaries of progress. • For Sajid Ali, writing of a draft manuscript (to be submitted for publication in a scientific journal) documenting the performance of Fresnel wave versus finite difference methods in simulating the 3D propagation of x-ray waves in refractive media. • For Ming Du, completion of a draft manuscript (to be submitted for publication in a scientific journal) documenting the use of automatic differentiation for the 3D reconstruction of objects beyond the depth of focus limit.
