This proposal describes experimental and theoretical work aimed at developing novel fabrication tools and theory methods that can uncover new hybrid modes associated with 2D lattices of plasmonic nanoparticles. These not-yet-realized optical modes are inspired by concepts in topological photonics and can potentially be realized in mechanically tunable honeycomb lattices, in lattices that take advantage of multipole excitation and magnetic plasmons, and in lattices with patterned regions of gain materials that are designed to break parity-time (PT) symmetry. The scope of work includes both theory-driven and data-driven approaches to lattice design, with software development an important part of the project.
