Description
This work order will support the research of Mr. Kazi Sadman, on the behalf of Northwestern University under the supervision of Dr. Zhang Jiang (ANL) and Prof. Kenneth Shull (Northwestern U.).
Mr. Sadman's research will use synchrotron radiation to prepare and measure block copolymers synthesized from well-defined starting blocks whose mechanics and responsiveness we have determined. The self-assembly of these block co-polyelectrolytes into micelles and gels will be studied by techniques including grazing incidence x-ray scattering. We are interested in learning how controlling the block length, charge or counter-ion identity can affect self-assembly, and how these properties can change under external conditions, such as solvent vapor annealing and shear. Kazi will perform experiments, interpret their results, and prepare articles for publication in scientific journals. The x-ray experimental work will be performed at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). In Dr. Alec Sandy’s Time-Resolved Research Group, in which Dr. Jiang works, one of the R&D missions is to develop a combination of x-ray scattering and imaging tools in the time domain from seconds to milliseconds to probe dynamics and kinetics in a variety of polymeric materials in order to facilitate the development of functional materials and energy-related devices. Mr. Sadman’s work is to understand the formation of block copolymer films and will directly benefit the APS and ANL in this area of polymer/nanomaterial research and in understanding the structure/function relationships in these materials.
All data and associated graphs, calculations, and other results of this effort will be provided to Dr. Zhang Jiang of ANL prior to the end of the work order period.
