This research aims to investigate reaction routes to discover and characterize new types of complex chalcogenide compounds and understand their structures, chemical bonding and physical properties. The project employs intermediate temperature syntheses strategies that favor paths to new compositions. We hypothesize that pre-organized building blocks are present in reactions containing fluxes and their formation is guided by tuning the flux composition and temperature. We also hypothesize that certain robust structure types can be manipulated in a rational manner to design new isotypic functional materials. The project focuses on metal chalcogenides because they define a large and important field of chemistry and offer great research opportunities as they continue to present appealing, cutting-edge, intellectual, and scientific challenges. They are a large class with a broad set of chemical and physical properties involving diverse phenomena that impact an astonishing variety of applications.
