The researchers propose to develop a simple and inexpensive technique to optically pump trapped TeH+ molecular ions into their ground quantum state. Building upon their previous demonstration of molecular ion rotational cooling using a mode-locked femtosecond laser, the new technique will use inexpensive commercially available telecom-band diode lasers and interference filters. The researchers will first perform the relevant spectroscopy on this species, whose properties are known with some confidence from theory but has yet to be experimentally studied. They will then load TeH+ molecular ions into a trap and demonstrate rotational cooling
