The Hub: The Rebuild Illinois Wet Lab Capital Program

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Northwestern University is seeking $3 million in capital funding from the State of Illinois to renovate wet lab space in an existing laboratory building in downtown Evanston. These funds along with an additional $3.665 million in matching funds from the university will enable the first phase of a uniquely positioned life science incubator, The Hub. The Hub will provide much-needed collaborative incubation space, strategically located next to a nationally ranked research institution with innovators who are defining new fields in healthcare. The proposed initial new space, dedicated to early-stage startups and associated entrepreneurial programming and services, will deliver the amplifying and boundary-spanning benefits of co-location encompassing • 6.5 move-in ready wet laboratories for startup companies • Office, conference, and community space for the companies embedded with supporting staff • Classroom space for programming and events • “Hotel” office space for “Venture-in-Residence” and “Corporate-in-Residence” partners The University anticipates the new space will jump start a cascade of entrepreneurial activity and is committed to a subsequent expansion phase to grow The Hub’s footprint with additional laboratory and communal spaces.
