Description

The overall goal of this project is to identify systemic immune factors that contribute to the development
of brain metastases in patients with lung cancer. Identification of these factors is critical as predictive
biomarkers in patients at risk for metastasis and as therapeutic targets to prevent the development of
metastases. While most studies to date have focused on identifying genomic changes in the tumor that
promote metastasis, this project takes a novel approach, focusing on systemic immune factors
influenced by the tumor to combat metastatic disease to the brain.
In order to address the overall goal, we will investigate the following specific aims:
Aim 1: To identify differences in peripheral immune phenotype between NSCLC patients with and
without brain metastases
Aim 2: To identify changes in peripheral immune phenotype in patients with NSCLC that predict the
development of brain metastases
Aim 3: To develop a preclinical model for studying tumor derived factors that influence peripheral
immune phenotype in NSCLC
