Tracking the Evolution of an X-ray Counterpart to a Gravitational Wave Event

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

The purpose of this proposal is to use Chandra Cycle 18 Target-of-Opportunity (TOO) observations to monitor the evolution of the X-ray counterpart to a gravitational wave event detected with Advanced LIGO/VIRGO. Upon successful identification of the counterpart at optical wavelengths through our CTIO/DECam program, we will trigger our Chandra program. Observations are planned to span 14-150 days after the event. A complete picture of the event will require the determination of the redshift and host galaxy properties, requiring ground-based optical imaging and spectroscopy.
