Abstract

Using an idea of Copson, it is possible to solve the problems of indentation of an elastic layer by a circular punch in which the face of the punch is non-symmetrical and of opening a penny-shaped crack with an arbitrary pressure distribution. In the analysis the punch problem for an elastic layer and the crack problem for a thick plate are reduced to the solution of Fredholm integral equations.
