Abstract

The synthesis, structure, spectra and properties of (Ph4P)[Ni(MSA)(SPh)] (tetraphenylphosphonium 2-(2-mercaptophenyl)salicyladiminato thiophenolato nickelate(II)) (I) are reported. The compound crystallizes as red needles in the monoclinic spaces group P21/c with cell dimensions a = 10.813(6), b = 17.061(6), c = 19.873(10) Å, β = 100.06(5)°, V = 3610(3) Å3, Z = 4. The structure was solved by conventional methods using 4919 reflections and refined to R = 5.7% and Rw = 6.6%. The complex features a square planar Ni2+ environment in which the metal center is bound to two sulfur, a nitrogen an an oxygen atom. The corresponding phenolato complex (Ph4P)[Ni(MSA)(OPh)] (II) is X-ray isomorphous to I. The electronic spectra and electrochemical properties of I and II are discussed.
