Abstract

We propose a new model for track etching in muscovite mica valid for ions with ∼ keV/amu energies. This model is crucial for experiments which use the ∼ Gyr age of mica to search for hypothetical particles such as monopoles or Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), a dark matter candidate. We then confront this new model with four independent experimental observations, which cannot be explained by any model to date, and find that it succesfully reproduces all of them.
