A qualitative model to describe the microchipping wear mode in ceramic rollers

Abstract

A two-dimensional model of surface cracks near a Hertzian contact is developed. The cracks are allowed to curve and the optimal path of crack propagation is determined based on the maximum energy release rate criterion. The results indicate a microchipping wear mode in ceramic rollers.
