Abstract
The long-term effectiveness of surgery for ectopic atrial tachycardia was evaluated in a study of 15 patients. All patients were initially treated with antiarrhythmic drugs, with an effective drug regimen identified for only five. The remaining 10 patients were treated surgically, with individual procedures guided by the results of computer-assisted intraoperative mapping. Three of the five patients treated long term with drugs bad arrhythmias recur but only one patient treated surgically. Surgery was found to be highly effective for treating ectopic atrial tachycardias in patients who are intolerant of or whose arrhythmias are refractory to antiarrhythmic drugs.
