In the case of epilepsy self help groups, our collaboration with group leaders may have extended the life of a dying social phenomenon and reduced the opportunity for critical inquiry into this phenomenon. The Epilepsy Foundation of America's self help group project was instigated by a social psychologist with financial support from the federal government. Both the population of people with epilepsy and their association had little or no role in initiating this project.
