Abstract

Preoperative preparation should include evaluating the patient with a history and physical, any necessary laboratory tests, inquiring about the NPO status of the patient, examining the airway, and determining the appropriate anesthetic plan. Discussing the anesthetic plan along with the risks and benefits of the anesthesia, as well as any procedures specific to the anesthetic, is essential for patient satisfaction, anxiety reduction, and for obtaining informed consent.
