Abstract

A linear elastic cylinder of finite length is sheared in a direction perpendicular to its axis of symmetry such that displacements are prescribed on its ends while its lateral surface remains stress free. The solution to this asymmetric problem is found by using an eigenfunction expansion technique from which results were previously obtained in the axisymmetric case. The stress singularities at the flat ends of the cylinder require a special technique which is incorporated in this paper.
