Abstract

Mechatronic devices allow for the precise evaluation of upper extremity strength and reaching ability after stroke. Additionally, these devices can administer a systematic progression of a reaching intervention designed to target flexion synergy expression and its consequence, loss of independent joint control. This paper provides an overview of a time-efficient mechatronic evaluation and intervention protocol addressing upper extremity reaching ability and the loss of independent joint control after stroke. They are designed for implementation in the inpatient research setting for the study of early stroke recovery.
