Anaesthetic management of an insulin‐dependent diabetic child during cardiopulmonary bypass

Abstract

The management of an insulin‐dependent diabetic child presenting for correction of complex congenital heart disease requiring cardiopulmonary bypass is described. A constant rate glucose infusion and variable rate insulin infusion, combined with frequent serum glucose measurements, allowed prompt response to the glucose alterations associated with surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass.
