Anisotropy of the Metamagnetic Transition in UPt3

Abstract

The angular dependence of the magnetic moment of the heavy fermion compound UPt3 has been measured near the metamagnetic transition by using a vibrating sample magnetometer for angles between an external magnetic field and the basal plane in the range 0°-50°. The value of magnetic field at which the metamagnetic transition occurs increases with the angle between the applied field and the basal plane. A planar geometry of the transition explains this behavior.
