Abstract
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has proven to be of significant benefit in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. This modality enables continuous, noninvasive monitoring of an entire interventional procedure, while at the same time allowing maintenance of a sterile field without interfering with fluoroscopy or the interventional procedure itself. Moreover, the superior intracardiac imaging offered by TEE provides unparalleled realtime visualization of intracardiac anatomy, thus TEE has become indispensable for many catheter-based interventions such as closure of atrial and ventricular septal defects. Currently, the availability of pediatric multiplane TEE probes permits TEE monitoring of procedures even in infants and very young children. This chapter discusses the use and applications of TEE in the cardiac catheterization setting, specifically as regards its utility for interventional procedures.
