Time portability of real-time ultrasound equipment has allowed examination of the fragile premature or compromised full-term infant to be accomplished in an optimal life support environment. Real-time scanning also offers the ability of its dynamic image capability. This article is designed to be a brief review of general applications of real-time abdominal sonography in the neonate, with the majority of the sonographic examinatios presented here having been performed in the neonatal intensiv care unit.
