Abstract

The Author considers general fluid approximations to the linearized Boltzmann Equation. It is shown in what sense the Navier-Stokes equations are a valid approximation. Furthermore Navier-Stokes is the only such 'fluid system' which satisfies the stated conditions. A number of related developments are also mentioned, including the use of the 'projected Navier-Stokes equations'. (A)
