Abstract

Severe obesity in adolescents is a major public health problem with few effective interventions. Bariatric surgery is superior to lifestyle changes alone in treating severe obesity. Based on the success of bariatric surgery in adults, weight loss surgery (WLS) is increasingly considered an appropriate treatment option for selected adolescents. A developmental approach is necessary to provide effective care and achieve optimal health outcomes while minimizing risks. This review discusses the indications for surgical treatment in adolescents, the common surgical procedures available for weight loss, the outcomes of these procedures, and the importance of multidisciplinary management for adolescent patients.
