Abstract

Empirical rule is postulated to describe nonhomogeneous distribution of undrained shear strength with depth for purely cohesive soil; associated soil bearing capacity for strip load of uniform intensity is determined for variety of nonhomogeneous strength distributions, and results are presented in series of charts and equation; bearing capacity is found to be strongly dependent on width of applied load, and to lesser extent on degree of overconsolidation of upper zone.
