Abstract

The bending of a cantilever brought gradually into contact with a cylindrical supporting surface is studied. The problem is a standard one if beam theory is used, and a comparison is made with a solution obtained by means of the theory of elasticity. Both solutions show good agreement when quantities such as load vs. relative approach are compared for d/l ≤ 0·05. The agreement is not especially good when the contact stress distribution is compared for the two solutions.
