Abstract

In this review, the issue of ultrastructural basis of filtration is addressed with particular emphasis on tracer studies performed during the last two decades. To a lesser extent, contemporary key physiologic studies are also incorporated in an effort to give the reader a broader understanding of the process of glomerular filtration. Finally, an attempt is made to elucidate molecular defects in the capillary wall that ultimately result in the leakage of plasma proteins into the urinary space.
