Abstract

To the Editor: We were interested to read the recent article by Jick and Walker (Feb. 3 issue)1 and the editorial in the same issue2 on smoking in ulcerative colitis. In a recent mortality study of patients with ulcerative colitis3 we found significant deficits in deaths from cardiovascular disease and cancer of the lung in men. In an attempt to explore these deficits we examined the risk factors for cardiovascular disease in a consecutive series of 103 outpatients with ulcerative colitis and compared them with those of matched controls drawn from the work force of a local factory. Smoking.
