Coherence estimation from a single intra-cardiac lead with two electrode elements

Abstract

The possibility of estimating coherence measurements of cardiac rhythms from a single lead with two electrode elements is examined, and whether such measurements could be used to differentiate fibrillatory and nonfibrillatory rhythms is discussed. Simultaneous atrial recordings from a single bipole and two unipoles were made in those patients who exhibited atrial fibrillation and/or sinus rhythm during electrophysiologic testing or cardiac catheterization. Fifteen patients (seven patients with sinus rhythm and eight patients with chronic atrial fibrillation) comprised the study population. Results indicate that magnitude-squared coherence (MSC) can be calculated from a single bipolar lead where MSC is determined between the bipole and one of the unipoles that constitutes the bipole. MSC calculated from a single lead can reliably discriminate atrial fibrillation from sinus rhythm.
