Abstract

BASED ON DATA OBTAINED FROM 1360 CHEMICAL ANALYSES, REPRESENTING A RELATIVELY COMPLETE MATRIX OF 75 SAMPLES TESTED FOR 22 PARAMETERS, THE STATISTICAL CHARACTER OF MAINTENANCE DREDGINGS FROM ONE TYPICAL HARBOR DURING A 4-MONTH PERIOD IS EVALUATED AND THE REPRESENTATIVENESS OF A RANDOM SAMPLE IS ASSESSED.TEST PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED BRIEFLY, AND CORRELATIONS AMONG VARIOUS MEASURED PARAMETERS ARE DETERMINED IN TERMS OF THEIR 0.01 AND 0.10 SIGNIFICANCE LEVELS.ALTHOUGH THE RANGE OF VARIATION FOR MOST OF THE MEASURED PARAMETERS IS QUITE LARGE, THE MEAN VALUES OF THE CONCENTRATIONS OF FOUR KEY PARAMETERS ARE FOUND TO EXCEED THE LIMITING CONCENTRATIONS SPECIFIED BY ONE TYPICAL SET OF GUIDELINES USED TO CATEGORIZE 'POLLUTED' DREDGINGS.(A.)
