Abstract

In an attempt to improve the sensitivity of Fourier phase imaging an analysis was made of the distribution function of Fourier amplitude, as well as phase, over the left ventricle. Twenty six individuals with normal (NL) cardiac function served as controls for a population of 26 subjects with documented coronary artery disease (CAD) and mild wall-motion abnormalities at rest. Despite the fact that 22 of the CAD group had normal values of EF, analysis of symmetry parameters of the amplitude distribution function improved the sensitivity for the detection of wall-motion defects from 65% (phase alone) to 85% (phase and amplitude combined). Thus, combining the analysis of amplitude distribution functions with those of phase improves the ability to detect wall-motion abnormalities.
