Abstract
VARIOUS TESTING PROCEDURES ARE USED TO DETERMINE THE ORGANIC CONTENT OF TYPICAL MAINTENANCE DREDGINGS FROM FIVE AREAS AROUND THE GREAT LAKES, AND COMPARISONS ARE MADE AMONG THE RESULTS OBTAINED.SINCE THE ORGANIC CONSTITUENTS IN THE DREDGINGS ARE VERY COMPLEX, THEIR DETAILED IDENTIFICATION AND QUANTIFICATION IS RATHER IMPRACTICAL FROM AN ENGINEERING POINT OF VIEW.HOWEVER, THE MEASURED AMOUNTS OF ORGANIC MATTER ARE FOUND TO BE DEPENDENT ON THE TYPE OF TEST AND THE SUITABILITY OF A PARTICULAR TEST FOR A GIVEN MATERIAL, AND THIS SITUATION INCREASES THE DEGREE OF UNCERTAINTY ASSOCIATED WITH QUANTITATIVE INTERPRETATIONS AND CORRELATIONS THAT INVOLVE DIFFERENT TESTING TECHNIQUES.BASED ON THE EXPERIENCE OBTAINED IN THIS STUDY, CERTAIN RECOMMENDATIONS ARE ADVANCED TO MODIFY EXISTING PROCEDURES WHEN APPLIED TO DREDGE SPOIL.(A.)
