Abstract

In a randomized prospective study 21 patients with pneumonia were treated with either ceftizoxime (14 patients) or cefamandole (7 patients). Thirteen patients (93%) treated with ceftizoxime had a successful outcome; nine (64%) were cured, four (29%) improved and one (7%) patient failed to respond to treatment. All seven patients (100%) treated with cefamandole were cured. Only minimal toxicity occurred with either agent. Therapeutic responses can be obtained with parenteral administration of ceftizoxime every 12 hours.
