Abstract

MITOTIC apparatuses (MA) isolated from sea urchin eggs are not functional¹, and although their biochemical composition^1-5, stability⁶ and morphological characteristics^7-10 have been studied, isolated MA may be quite different from in vivo MA. In particular, MA may lose material during isolation¹¹, and the birefringence may be altered. We therefore studied the effect of the isolation procedure on mass and birefringence.
