Abstract

The problem of the enhancement of a low bit-rate compressed video sequence using the information provided by the encoder is investigated in this paper. The proposed algorithm is spatio-temporally adaptive and enforces different degrees of between-block, within-block, and temporal smoothness of the decompressed frames based on macroblock types. The algorithm uses the projections onto the sets that capture the information conveyed by the transmitted data to constrain the solution space. A partially automatic regularization parameter estimation algorithm is also proposed in this paper. An analysis of PSNR gain per macroblock type is presented to cast insight into the compressed video enhancement problem. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
