Abstract
A simulation procedure is used to analyze the influence of a randomly varying coefficient of permeability on the one-dimensional consolidation settlement of clay layers. The method of analysis involves simulating of soil profile when the basic characteristics of the homogeneous random function describing the soil permeability are known; making the governing field equation discrete by means of an implicit finite difference scheme, and statistically analyzing the resulting sample population when the simulation has been performed a sufficient number of times.
