Abstract

The following four kinds of tribological tests are carried out to clarify the correlation between the various tribiological indices obtained by them: 1) fundamental tribo-test, with a four ball tester; 2) fundamental test for metal forming, with a compression-twist type tester; 3) simulative tribo-test for metal forming, with a strip-ironing type tester; 4) a practical use test by a deep drawing apparatus. The lubricants studied are several different mineral oils. On the basis of the above tests, various indices have been proposed to evaluate lubricity, and the physical meanings have been defined consistently. It is clarified in this paper that the indices show a good correlation when there is a similar surface appearance after sliding friction contact.
