Abstract
This chapter examines research that documents the evolutionary bases of the role of culture in human learning and development. It offers an expansive understanding of culture not as static and homogenous, but rather as participation in cultural practices that include homogeneity and heterogeneity within and across time and spaces. It provides research based illustrations of the diversity of pathways through which human communities grapple with the foundational tasks of development across the life span. The chapter concludes with research based examples of educational efforts to recruit culturally rooted repertoires of practice to support learning.
