Abstract

A coordinate major is an additional major aiming to complement the primary one. Compared to a major, it requires less teaching resources; compared to a minor, it provides for more in-depth study. It attracts students from different disciplines and hence organically produces a diverse environment of learners focused on interdisciplinary issues. Despite these distinct benefits, it is a relatively rare program as far as undergraduate computer science programs are concerned. In this paper I describe the design of a coordinate major in computer science program at Tulane University, discuss implementation details, and provide practical suggestions for implementing such a program in another university.
