In this review article, a comprehensive discussion of current status and future trends of infrared detectors is provided. At the beginning, the overview of infrared system fundamentals and detectors are presented. Classification of various infrared detectors is done on the basis of their principle of operation and material systems used. Detailed description of the basic operation theory on both thermal and photon detectors are presented in a uniform way convenient for various detector materials. Next, the current state of the art infrared detectors are presented starting from the thermal detectors. Various kinds of photon detectors based on the semiconductor materials are discussed and compared. Better material properties of III-V semiconductors provide numerous advantages over current IV-VI and II-VI material systems and are promising material system for future infrared detector applications. Future trends for uncooled and multi-spectral infrared photon detector developments are discussed in the conclusion.
