Abstract

Recent point defect formation and defect diffusion data in magnetite are used to analyze tracer diffusion data of Fe, Co, Cr and Al for motion enthalpies in vacancy and interstitial(cy) mechanisms. Correlations are made with ion properties such as radius, polarizability, and bond strength. The best correlation was made with the melting points of the end member ferrites containing the ions of interest. An explanation for the consistent minimum in diffusion coefficients is given.
