Abstract

Multiferroics materials, displaying magnetic, polar, and elastic order parameters simultaneously, have garnered intense interests because they may host electricfield controllable magnetism, which can be utilized in devices for information storage and processing. In this chapter, based on recent progress in understanding microscopic mechanisms supporting multiferroism and advances in materials synthesis, we describe the basic routes by which to design new multiferroic oxides using electronic structure based calculations to guide materials selection and discovery.
