Abstract

Measurement of the alpha inelastic-scattering cross sections for the first two 2+ states in S34 shows unambiguously that the relative sign of the neutron and proton transition matrix elements for both 2+ states are positive, just as in the cases of Mg26 and Si30. Consideration of coupled-channel effects in inelastic scattering do not change this overall result. The present results are in contradiction with the predictions of recent shell-model calculations.
