Abstract

Using a longue durée approach, this essay draws a parallel between youth and resistance insofar as definitions, categories, and manifestations cannot be generalized across spatial-temporal contexts. Because young people's uncontrolled dissent and increased public visibility are perceived as power, their expressions of resistance are soon constrained, contained, disciplined, and defeated. But like rhizomes, acts and expressions of resistance circulate below the mainstream and re-emerge at different places and times. In conclusion, the essay urges an examination of young people's self-expressive activities to produce new thinking about societies in the Middle East.
