Abstract
The √3 ×√3R30° reconstruction on the polar surface of MgO was discussed using transmission electron diffraction (TED). The surface was nonstoichiometric and was terminated by a single magnesium atom. A charge compensation electron hole was localized in the next oxygen layer. Analysis show that the partial charges were in reasonable agreement with empirical bond-valence estimations.
