Abstract

BASED ON THE RESULTS FROM AN EXTENSIVE TESTING PROGRAM INVOLVING ABOUT 2000 CHEMICAL ANALYSES ON OVER 70 SAMPLES FROM FOUR HARBOURS IN THE GREAT LAKES AREA, SEVERAL BROAD CONCLUSIONS ARE ADVANCED CONCERNING THE CONCENTRATIONS OF VARIOUS CONSTITUENTS FOUND DURING DIFFERENT PHASES OF THE DREDGING AND DISPOSAL OPERATION, AND COMPARISONS ARE MADE BETWEEN THE MEASURED CONCENTRATIONS OF THE VARIOUS POLLUTANTS AND EPA STANDARDS.SEVERAL SERIES OF TESTS WERE CONDUCTED TO INVESTIGATE SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF THE DREDGING PROCESS; THESE INCLUDE (I) THE CONSTITUENT CONCENTRATIONS OF SAMPLES TAKENT DURING THE VARIOUS PHASES OF A TYPICAL DREDGING CYCLE (AN EFFORT WAS MADE AT ONE HARBOUR TO SAMPLE BOTTOM SEDIMENTS THE DAY PRIOR TO DREDGING, WHILE THEY WERE BEING DREDGED, AND WHEN THEY WERE DEPOSITED IN A DIKED CONTAINMENT AREA), (II) THE VARIATION IN CONTAMINANTS DURING THE PUMP-OUT PERIOD OF A HOPPER DREDGE, (III) A COMPARISON OF SURFACE WATERS AND BOTTOM SEDIMENTS FROM FOUR HARBOUR AREAS, (IV) THE VARIATION IN WATER QUALITY WITH DISTANCE FROM THE OUTFLOW WEIR, (V) COMPOSITION OF THE SEDIMENTS ON THE HARBOUR BOTTOM AS A FUNCTION OF DEPTH, AND (VI) THE DISPOSITION OF PESTICIDES IN BOTTOM SEDIMENTS AND SUPERNATANT WATERS.(A).
