Funding

This path from vision to reality was not always easy. Despite two years of rejection from multiple funders to support this educational program, she persisted. Finally in 1997, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) agreed to fund a small grant for a needs assessment. This needs assessment study revealed (1) only 2 % of 50 major nursing textbooks reviewed contained any content that could be used for EOL and palliative care, (2) nursing faculty reported a lack of knowledge and expertise in teaching this content, and (3) numerous barriers existed to implement good palliative care. 2-4 Armed with these data, Betty sought additional RWJF funding to develop and teach the first End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) train-the-trainer curriculum.
