Abstract

This chapter provides answers to practice-based questions with case studies covering the new principles of diagnosis, classification, staging, treatment, and outcomes in the rapidly advancing field of early and locally advanced prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed malignancy in the United States behind breast cancer with 224,733 new cases diagnosed in 2019, and an estimated 268,490 cases to be diagnosed in 2022 according to the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program. Median age at time of diagnosis is 67 years old, with prevalence highest in African Americans at 175.8 cases per 100,000 men per year. Current areas of focus include improved screening using newer imaging modalities, identification of patients eligible for surveillance, tighter control of recurrent or persistent disease, and extension of treatment options in the metastatic setting.
