Elastic and inelastic scattering of 6 MeV neutrons

Abstract

Angular distributions of the elastic and inelastic scattering of 6 MeV neutrons from carbon and seven heavy nuclei have been measured at 10° intervals between 20° and 150° using a pulsed-beam time-of-flight technique. The elastic scattering angular distributions have been successfully fitted with the predictions of the non-local optical-potential model of Perey and Buck. The inelastic scattering angular distributions are spherically symmetric in agreement with the predictions of the compound nucleus model. An estimate of 10±5% is obtained for the direct interaction contribution.
