Abstract

Electronic structure and properties of the new high T//c transition metal oxides (La//2// minus //xM//xCuO//4 and YBa//2Cu//3O//7// minus // delta ) as determined from highly precise all-electron local density calculations are described and discussed. The important contributions of charge transfer excitations make excitons a likely candidate for their high T//c.
